Quick Hits: SLU Uses Late Run, Sinks Spiders

Cody Ellis

SLU fought off a "grind it out" style for most of the game and beat Richmond 64-50 to move to 21-5 on the season.

Game Ball: Cody Ellis. Ellis didn't set the world on fire, but his team-high 14 points consisted of five-for-seven shooting from two-point range and he worked well in the interior offensively and defensively. This was a prime example of Ellis's maturation as a player from last season.

Key Number: 20. That was SLU's advantage in bench scoring tonight. The Billikens outscored the Spiders 33-13 off the bench, helped greatly by Ellis's 14.

Weix's Take: On a night when a letdown was possible, SLU looked sluggish against a tough matchup zone but used a 10-2 run from 6:24 remaining to 2:22 left in the ballgame to take control. Tonight's off night from Brian Conklin showed SLU's depth, as Cory Remekun stepped in admirably. The junior big man had nine points, seven rebounds, and two blocks in just 15 minutes of playing time. With an atrocious bubble for this year's NCAA Tournament, every win continues to strengthen the Billikens chances at a bid. At 21-5 and 9-3 in A-10 play, SLU looks primed for postseason play in March. Seemingly all that is left to be decided is what seed the Midtown Boys will occupy.

Quote of the Night: "This is a bastard team to play" -- Rick Majerus referring to Richmond. He said it was made in an affectionate manner.

Up Next: SLU welcomes in league-worst Fordham to Chaifetz Arena on Saturday. The 2012 Mardi Gras edition of Billiken Basketball will tip at 3 p.m. CT.
