Wisconsin Junior Has Three Offers

Germantown (Wis.) High School forward Ben Averkamp is still a year away from being able to sign with a Division I basketball program, but he's already attracted a few scholarship offers and plenty of interest from colleges.

"It's been going pretty well I'd say," Averkamp said. "It's been exciting."

The 6-foot-7, 215-pound junior picked up scholarship offers from Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Green Bay back in April.

His third offer came from Saint Louis University after making an unofficial visit to the school on Sept. 24.

"I really didn't know what to expect going there," Averkamp said. "I just went. I was very excited about the offer."

Averkamp said he's also received interest from Bradley, Iowa State, Northern Iowa, William & Mary and Loyola-Chicago.

Though he plays center on his high school team, Averkamp would likely play either power forward or small forward at the next level. He said he has a pretty good mid-range game and is working to extend his shooting range to beyond the 3-point line.

"I think (the Saint Louis U coaches) see me fitting in as a 3 or 4 and someone who can step out and pull a 4 guy out and then also score inside," he said.

Averkamp averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds per game as a sophomore, as Germantown went 19-4 and won the North Shore Conference championship.

The Wisconsin junior also has a 4.0 grade-point average and plans to be a pre-med major in college.
