There were two surprises for Saint Louis University baseball players during the second day of the Major League Baseball Draft late last week. The first was junior pitcher Dave Sever falling to the 21st round. The second was catcher Casey Moore being picked late by the Detroit Tigers.

Sever, a right-handed pitcher from Burr Ridge, Ill., was ranked by BaseballAmerica.com as the sixth-best prospect in the state of Missouri entering the draft. But the 6-foot-4 junior fell to the 21st round, where he was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers with the 637th overall selection.

He became the fourth Billikens player to be picked this decade and was the highest drafted player selected since Mike Huelsmann was selected in the 20th round in 1996.

Sever went 5-6 in 2008 and struck out 80 batters in 93 1/3 innings. After three seasons with the Billikens, Sever is tied for fourth in career victories with 16, is fifth in innings pitched (276) and sixth in strikeouts (199).

It is not yet known whether or not Sever will return for his senior season.

Moore, from Holt High School in Wentzville, Mo., had returned to Saint Louis University for a fifth year of eligibility in 2008 and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. He was selected in the 48th round of the draft.

The catcher batted .238 with seven doubles, one home run and 18 RBIs in 52 games. In 2007, Moore led the Billikens with 14 doubles and 26 RBIs.

Sever and Moore are the first SLU baseball teammates to be drafted in the same season since Darin Cissell and Tony Hausladen were picked in 1997.
